World Book Day
This year we are going to spend the day working with the ideas found in ‘The Lost Words’ by Robert MacFarlane and Jackie Morris.
When Robert and Jackie discovered that the Oxford English Dictionary was removing words from their Children’s Dictionaries they had to do something! They found out that these words were from the natural world – Dandelion, Otter, Bramble and Acorn, all gone.
The Lost Words is a celebration of nature words and the natural world they invoke.
On the day, pupils will be writing poems, stories or letters about these words and creating their own artwork to go with it. If you speak a different language at home you could write your poem in your first language.
Pupils are encouraged to research their chosen word and prepare ideas and possibly resources for their work on the day; they could bring in books, magazines or art materials. They can also take part in the ‘Photo Competition’ by capturing one of these Lost Words in a photograph.
Pupils are also welcome to come to school dressed as one of these words or their favourite book characters.
