Sky Sports Mentor for Oakfield!

This academic year, Oakfield is taking part in the Sky Sports ‘Living for Sports’ scheme.  Tom Reed, our Athlete Mentor, visited in January to meet with the PE team to develop the Oakfield programme.

Oakfield will now be organising sessions with external coach, Chris Roach from Elevation Martial Arts for a target group of pupils.

The Mentor programme aims to develop pupil     self-esteem and improve behaviour.  These projects have already had great results with re-focusing under achieving pupils.

“We anticipate a great improvement in behaviour and self-esteem for many or all participating pupils. Plans to later include our Gifted and Talented pupils with additional sport as part of this programme, are also in the pipeline.”

Miss Pullen (Sports Coordinator)

Chess Champion!

Damian, in Year 6, competed in the Somerset Primary Schools Chess Association Tournament on Sunday and won the Under 11 section.

The competition was held at St John’s School, Frome and Damian shares the top spot with another boy. However as Damian beat the same boy in an earlier round, Damian is the clear winner!  The two boys are awarded joint first. Damian will be presented with his shield when its been engraved.

This tournament was one of a round of similar ones the association is holding all over Somerset, to  encourage children of primary age to get together and compete within the same county. Well Done Damian!

Quality Mark for Geography

Oakfield Geography department has been working hard over the last 6 months to gain the ‘Secondary Geography Quality Mark’ awarded by ‘The Geographical Association’.

Geography Quality Arts Mark

The overarching strength of the Quality Mark is its capacity to act as an effective ‘lever of change’ for the development of geography in the schools that take part. The award itself recognises the high standards of teaching and learning that exist within Oakfield’s geography department, and the contribution it makes to the local community. We were awarded the accolade as a result of the stimulating and imaginative Geography curriculum that is on offer at Oakfield.

Ruby, a year 8 pupil, stated that ‘The best thing about our geography lessons is that we get to do real geography like field trips and fun map tasks about gorillas!’

Head of Humanities, Mr McGrath reflects on this achievement, stating ‘I’m very proud of the award as it confirms the high level of teaching and learning from both staff and pupils alike.’
