Blossom Picnic in the Discovery Orchard

Children from Oakfield Apple core group met at the school’s Discovery Orchard on May the 7th to enjoy the sunshine and celebrate the orchard’s first blossom. At the Blossom Picnic pupils looked at other trees in blossom at the Academy and due to the lack of apple blossom caused by the long winter, made their own! (see picture) Pupils also enjoyed delicious apple refreshments and spent time planning the ‘Big Apple Scrump’ week, to be held in the autumn. The ‘Big Apple Scrump’ week (our last event in collaboration with Fruitfull) will involve asking the community for donations of fruit that pupils will weigh and re-distribute to community groups; as either bags of fruit or made into cakes or juice. The week will also involve being this year’s host of Frome’s successful Apple Day, in association with Frome Apple Group.  Apple Day is your chance to meet apple experts and identify the apples grown in your garden, eat apple refreshments, buy apple products and take part in apple activities as well as do some pressing. More information on the ‘Big Scrump Week’ and Apple Day how you can get involved will follow in due course. Oakfield wishes to thank Barbra Lakin, our Fruitfull partner, for all her support, expertise and for installing a successful apple culture at the Academy.
